Monte da Casteleja is located just 3km from the town of Lagos in western Algarve. Guillaume Leroux and his wife, Maria, run the Monte da Casteleja vineyard together. Three of the seven hectares of this typical Algarve estate are covered by regional varieties of vines. The estate was bought in 1952 by Guillaume's grandfather, a highly respected fisherman from Sagres. The name Monte da Casteleja come from the archaeologist who discovered the ruins of a small castle dating from the Roman period on this site, hence Casteleja. The word Monte is the name of a typical Portuguese farm with a house on the top of a small hill. The Monte da Casteleja soil is unique in the area and good for vine growing, Guided visits of the winery are made by Maria Leroux. There's also a shop where visitors can by wines and other regional products. Monte da Casteleja produces high quality white, red and rosê wines.
